Aptoide operated multiple sub-brands that lacked a unified communication strategy, creating fragmentation in how users perceived the ecosystem.

User Education

Many users were unfamiliar with alternative app stores and had concerns around security, usability, and legitimacy. A major communication challenge was educating mobile gamers on the benefits of using Aptoide, particularly its gamified ecosystem, rewards system, and exclusive features,

Industry Credibility

As an alternative app marketplace, Aptoide needed to strengthen trust and credibility within the developer ecosystem. This involved positioning the company as a serious industry player by showcasing platform results, success stories, partnerships, case studies, and business opportunities for developers and publishers

Fight the Monopoly

Operating in a market dominated by Google and Apple presented both a strategic and communication challenge. Aptoide sought to position itself within the broader conversation around the Digital Markets Act (DMA), app distribution freedom, and platform democratization, advocating for a more open mobile ecosystem.

Goals

  • Increase brand awareness and social engagement

  • Grow user acquisition, retention and ARPU

  • Expand relationships with game developers and publishers

  • Support the growth of top-grossing developers within the platform ecosystem

  • Strengthen Aptoide’s positioning in the global mobile gaming market

Developed a multi-platform communication strategy across the brand's digital channels, combining social-first storytelling with PR and industry positioning. The content strategy focused on gaming culture, platform education, developer visibility, product updates, trend-driven formats, and community engagement.

PR, Events & Industry
Positioning

Supported the positioning of Aptoide as a credible and competitive alternative app store through PR and B2B communication efforts. This included creating press releases, one-pagers, business materials, and LinkedIn communication focused on developers, publishers, and industry stakeholders.

The communication strategy aimed to strengthen visibility around topics such as app distribution freedom, the Digital Markets Act (DMA), and the growth opportunities available for developers within the Aptoide ecosystem. These efforts contributed to media coverage in international technology outlets including The Verge, TechCrunch, and 9to5Mac.

Rebranding - Unified Brand
Architecture

Consolidated multiple products and sub-brands under a single and stronger umbrella positioning, transforming them into extensions of the Aptoide ecosystem (e.g. Aptoide Wallet, Aptoide Connect). This created greater brand consistency, improved recognition, and simplified communication across both user and developer audiences.

One message - Simplified
B2B Communication

Reframed business communication to make Aptoide’s value proposition clearer and more accessible for developers and publishers. Prioritized case studies, one-pagers, pitch decks, and short-form videos focused on concrete business benefits, platform opportunities, and success stories. Communication efforts were strategically reinforced through industry events, conferences, and networking opportunities where target stakeholders were already present.

User Education & Ecosystem Awareness

Developed educational communication materials designed to demystify alternative app stores and explain the advantages of the Aptoide ecosystem. Landing pages, social content, videos, and platform-focused storytelling were used to simplify technical concepts, promote gamification features, and increase trust and adoption among mobile gamers and users.

Thought Leadership

Strengthened Aptoide’s positioning within the broader conversation around the Digital Markets Act (DMA), app distribution freedom, and digital democratization. Through PR initiatives, LinkedIn communication, and industry-focused content, Aptoide was positioned as a company aligned with the movement toward a more open and accessible mobile ecosystem - a vision deeply connected to the company’s DNA since its foundation.

Localization & International Expansion

Expansion

Adapted communication strategies to better align with Asian markets, particularly China and Japan, by focusing on localized messaging, culturally relevant partnerships, regional market expectations, and platform-specific communication styles. Efforts included emphasizing metrics and business results valued within the region, strengthening relationships with familiar local partners, and supporting the expansion into Japan through the launch and communication of a dedicated Japan-focused app store experience.

Reflections

What I would do differently

With more time and resources, I would invest further in creator-led and community-driven content, particularly within TikTok, YouTube, and gaming communities, to strengthen organic advocacy around the ecosystem. I would also expand long-form educational content and developer-focused onboarding materials to simplify adoption and deepen engagement for both users and publishers.

What the project demonstrated

This project demonstrated the importance of combining strategic positioning with platform-native storytelling in order to grow both credibility and community engagement. It also reinforced how communication can play a key role in simplifying complex technological ecosystems, building trust, and supporting broader industry conversations around accessibility, openness, and digital democratization.

AI Integration

When integrating AI into the workflow, the goal was never to replace creativity or strategy. It was to accelerate execution, improve consistency, and reduce repetitive manual work. Every tool and application was selected based on one principle: helping the team move faster, communicate more clearly, and create more scalable content systems without losing the human side of storytelling.

  • Tone of Voice & Messaging Consistency: Used Jasper AI to help standardize tone of voice and messaging across social media, PR materials, landing pages, and B2B communication assets, ensuring greater consistency across the Aptoide ecosystem.

  • Content Ideation & Structuring: Used ChatGPT for brainstorming content angles, generating hooks, organizing campaign ideas, simplifying technical concepts, and accelerating structure development for social media and educational content.

  • Image Generation & Creative Exploration: Used Midjourney to explore visual concepts, moodboards, and creative directions for social media and campaign ideation, helping speed up early-stage content experimentation and visual storytelling.

“Julia is an absolute team player and someone you can truly count on. At Aptoide, she took the lead on our social media channels and events, always bringing a great mix of creativity, organization, and attention to detail. She's adaptable, communicative, and always ready to jump in and support the team when needed. She handled a wide range of responsibilities efficiently and with a strong sense of ownership. I'm sure she'll continue to shine wherever she goes.”
